2008 September: Business Case: The semi- conductor equipment business

Senior managers were in need of practicing the nature and dynamics of tough competition in the business area.


The Powersim Approach
A “war game” was set up as a training session for Senior management. 250 managers were setup in 25 teams of 10 people, participating in the game. The teams played against the computer model.

The Simulation
The model used was the industry-leading model building tool and training platform. It encompassed the entire structure of a semiconductor equipment company including Research and Development, Production, Sales, Service, Pricing and Financials. In each round played teams made decisions on all areas of the business. Teams were given scores for their performance at the end of each round of simulation. Teams were able to look at the different reports including financial, marketing, sales and production after each round.

The Powersim Solution
Powersim software has contributed to the senior managers’ hands-on experience in managing the company in a competitive environment and changing market conditions. It has helped them to see the big picture - the effects of their decisions in a particular functional area, on other functions, and the overall company performance. The hands-on facilitated nature of the simulation activity kept the managers engaged throughout the activity, and promoted retention of learned concepts.

The Lesson Learnt
The team interaction helped managers
understand the interrelationship of other functional areas within the organization.
